The San Angelo Amateur Astronomy Association began in 1962, founded by Dr. Roy E. Moon. That early history is sketchy, but the first president on record was Neville Lawton, serving from 1962 to 1964. Roland Windell was elected in 1964 and served as president until 1982. Vernon Payne served as Secretary from 1964 until 1986. He also started publication of a newsletter (Starbeams and Heliowinds), the first issue being printed in 1964. The club has only had three newsletter editors: Rob Specht took over in 1986 and served until 2000; Andy Oliver has filled the position since 2001. In March of 2006, the name of the newsletter was changed from Starbeams and Heliowinds to San Angelo Astronomer.

Club membership has risen and fallen over the years, along with the general public interest in astronomy. Membership has been as low as ten to as many as fifty. Meetings were held at the Statio (Star Patio)at Dr.Moon's house from 1962 until 1987, when the official meeting place became the ASU Planetarium. The club had a booth several times during the now defunct Fiesta Del Concho Celebration. We have held countless star parties and observed many Astronomy Days. Our goal has always been to share our passion of astronomy with those around us.
